Vivid hues, festive fashions and swirling silks – on Friday, June 29, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., Gateway Dance Theatre (GDT) will present an original dance performance, Tapestry, at the Iowa State Historical building in downtown Des Moines. Made up of five colorful dances, this innovative suite explores the beauty and meaning of textiles traded and used by various cultures in Africa, Asia and America throughout the ages.
Because textiles are imbibed with historical narratives, Friday’s performance at the State Historical Building is an appropriate site to showcase Tapestry’s themes of legends, cultural rites, political expressions and personal stories.
The Tapestry dance suite tour was made possible through an Iowa Community Cultural Grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. GDT has also received support from Bravo, Principal Financial Group and Prairie Meadows.
