Please join us for a Mental Health Community Forum on Tuesday, March 13 at 6 PM at Walnut Hills Methodist Church, 12321 Hickman Road, Urbandale. Please read the attached flyer for more information.
NAMI Iowa plans to provide an eight hour, one day training for groups in the Parents and Teachers as Allies program from NAMI. It will be held Friday, March 9TH, 2012 at the NAMI Iowa office located at 5911 Meredith Dr. Ste. E, Des Moines, IA 50322. Start time: 10 am. Lunch will be provided by NAMI Iowa.
This training will enable its participants to deliver (as a group of four persons) a two hour in-service education program to school professionals and families to provide them with a better understanding of the early warning signs of mental illness in children and adolescents. Also, it will help their audience understand how to best intervene so that youth with mental health treatment needs are linked with services.
Those being trained should organize themselves in groups of 4 from the same locale as they will be working together when delivering the Parents and Teachers as Allies in-service. If you do not have a group formed, please contact the NAMI Iowa office for a possible match to a group. Each group needs to consist of:
1. To act as facilitator: A NAMI member – preferably one who has taught Visions for Tomorrow or NAMI Basics
2. A parent with lived experience
3. A person with mental illness, preferably a youth who can describe his/her school experiences re: their mental illness or a young adult who clearly recalls how he/she was treated in school.
4. A school teacher, administrator, or educational para- professional.
Please view the attached overview to give you a clearer picture of how this program functions. Also attached is a Parents and Teachers as Allies brochure.
Those who are interested in attending the training, please fill out and return the attached personal information request to firstname.lastname@example.org
