News You Can Use – May 24th, 2011

Today we are going to mix in a little fun with some National Service positions.

Finding a way to turn your – or someone else’s – junk into something useful has been turned into quite the business. But you can do it yourself without losing an arm or a leg in the process. Check out this great article from Landscaping Network via the Greater Des Moines Habitat ReStore, and check out their Facebook page every Tuesday for more great repurposing tips.

On to the National Service positions. Joining the military isn’t the only way to serve your country, though we do salute our troops as we head toward the Memorial Day weekend; you can also join up with one of the many National Service programs through AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps members serve all over the country with government and non-profits to improve infrastructure, create programming to support communities, and countless other types of projects. They can serve in a short term seasonal program or a full year, from any age 18+, after which they are able to collect a small but helpful educational award towards their past or future school expenses. Here are a couple local opportunities or check out the AmeriCorps website for more opportunities.
