Recently Mid City Connection sat down with some wonderful people at Anawim Housing. Tiffany King, Family Advocate and Bill Swanson, Director of Property Management, both shared about all that Anawim is doing to help provide individuals and families with a home. Anawim Housing owns and manages 220 safe and affordable permanent rental units. These homes are scattered across urban Des Moines and include single-family homes, duplexes, townhomes and traditional apartment buildings. They are rented to individuals and families who must meet certain income and employment criteria.
Anawim has been providing homes for people for more than 24 years and have had more than 95% occupancy over the past five years. As President Russ Frazier says on their website, More people need more homes. In 2009 they created nine town homes. In 2010 they created an additional six new homes as well as their new headquarters on Forest Avenue. This year they will finish construction on another 16 town homes. All said that is 31 more families who will have a place to call home. Anawim also has two additional housing programs that serve more specific needs. The Shelter Plus program subleases to chronically homeless people and those with drug addiction or HIV/AIDS. Shelter Plus provides supportive services and case management to the tenants. The Rapid Rehousing program is specifically for families that have suddenly become homeless.
Tiffany serves as a resource and advocate for the tenants of Anawim housing. She connects tenants to support services, education and health care resources and even home ownership. Anawim also provides funding for tenants to get involved in community programs and activities to encourage overall well being.
In recent news, Anawim is managing the Allen Village at River Bend located at the corner of 8th and Forest.
