Young Poets

Langston Hughes. Nikki Giovanni. Shel Silverstein. Youth at the Haven. What do they have in common?

Their original works were all featured on April 18th at the Forest Avenue Library. Eleven poets from the Haven at Children and Family Urban Ministries shared their talent in a room full of waiting ears at “Young Poets Inspired and Inspiring” to celebrate Poetry Month.  The poets, mostly first through third graders at Moulton shared both original works and works from their favorite poets.  Langston Houghes, Nikki Giovanni, and Shel Silverstein had some of their works highlighted, but the original works were the best received.

CFUM lets their kids pick out different clubs to be involved in at the Haven. After school they are given time to get more acquainted with subjects like poetry, gardening, sports, etc. Each semester they are able to vote on which clubs they would like to see created, and then they are split up by interest group. “Young Poets Inspired and Inspiring” is the culmination of one such club.

Look forward to some great videos of the event. Check back next week, and you can see some great videos of the young poets in action.

It’s always great to see  talent and creativity on display, always check the CFUM calendar, as well as the Mid City Connection calendar for more chances to view your local talent.
