Having never been a parent, I really wouldn’t know where to start setting up education for a child. Luckily, there are many experienced parents to tell me what info to send out. Pre-K apparently fills up quickly, so it is always important to know deadlines. Here is a little info on one such program from Des Moines Public Schools:
We are waiting for information from the state regarding funding for this program for the 2011-2012 school year. We will begin accepting universal preschool applications on March 10, 2011. An application does not guarantee a spot in the program. The application will be available on the DMPS website and at the Welcome Center located at 1301 2nd Ave; a copy of the child’s birth certificate will be required at the time of application. Locations are subject to change. If you have questions please contact Janet Riggle at 242-7588 or 242-7234.

We will begin taking Head Start applications on February 25, 2011 for the 2011-2012 school year. Head Start is a federally funding preschool program for income eligible families. You may call the Welcome Center at 242-7588 or 242-7234 to schedule an appointment to complete a Head Start application. The child’s birth certificate and proof of income will be required at the time of application.
Other Grant Programs
We have several other exemplary classrooms in our district funded by various other grants and partnerships including Shared Visions, Empowerment, Prairie Meadows, and United Way. These are all income based programs, for more information call Janet Riggle at 242-7588 or 242-7234.
